If you are looking for authentic Mediterranean food in the heart of the U District, Samir’s will make you smile. Samir’s offers classic meat dishes such as gyros and shawarma, plus an array of vegetarian items including spanakopita, stuffed grape leaves, and falafel.
Owner Samir Alawar opened the first Mediterranean restaurant in Washington state in 1974. He owned Cedar’s restaurant for twenty-seven years before he opened Samir’s in 2005.
Visitors to Seattle discover the restaurant through excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp. A TripAdvisor reviewer noted, I’ve been coming to this mom and pop Gyro shop since 2008 and have yet to have a better Gyro. Always fresh, good size, full of flavor.” A Yelp patron from Alaska wrote, “Samir is a kind, effervescent man who has been here 41 years and says he's still in love with his job. ‘If it's not hospitality you can taste it on the plate.’ Go to this place. Kindness and good food are a powerful combination.”
Samir appreciates the loyal customers who make the short walk to his restaurant from the University of Washington and the surrounding neighborhood. Light Rail construction, which cuts off through traffic on NE 43rd Street, has impacted the restaurant’s bottom line and he hopes business will improve when the Light Rail station opens in 2021.
The cozy dining room features tables with a view of Samir’s spotless kitchen. Samir’s serves lunch and dinner, and offers catering for events. 1316 NE 43rd St, 206-633-1778.
