Ted Brown Music Cares About Music Education
Ted Brown Music is a family-friendly music store that connects music students with instruments, lessons, equipment, and sheet music. The friendly and knowledgeable staff includes Manager Cody Kuzmer, who is a drummer, Assistant Manager Chris Champagne, who teaches music, and other musicians who work closely with local middle and high school music programs.
Students who rent from the store receive significant discounts when they purchase an instrument. Each rental year takes 10% off the instrument price with a maximum discount of 30%. “The discount has been as high as $1000.00,” says Kuzmer. The store’s website offers instruments for sale and lists local music teachers. One area of growth has been renting instruments through the company’s website. “Online rentals increased 300% in 2018,” explains Kuzmer. The store also offers brass and woodwind instrument repair.
Ted Brown Music opened its first store in Tacoma in 1931 and now has six locations in Washington state. The company is still family owned. The President and Vice President of the company are both Granddaughters of Ted Brown, and the Manager of the Puyallup store is the great-Grandson of Ted. In 2014, the company purchased Capitol Music Center in the U District and opened its Seattle store in that location.
Ted Brown Music holds a strong belief in the positive effects of playing music and music education. The company demonstrates their commitment to the value of music by giving free instruments to students who cannot afford rental fees.
